Translation into English of Tchaikovsky's Name

Translation into English of Tchaikovsky's Name

I would like to know which is the best way to translate into english Tchaikovsky`s name. Moreover, it must be the one which is more used in the world.

Thanks..!!

Nataly

If your mean, what is the most common way of spelling the composer's name (which in Russian was Петр Ильич Чайковский) in the English language, then that would be "Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky". But the composer himself used "Tchaikovsky", "Tschaikovsky" and "Tschaikowsky" when writing in other languages, while "Chaykovskiy" would be a more literal transliteration.

Here are some other versions from the Library of Congress catalog (http://authorities.loc.gov External):

The word Tchaikovsky is difficult to translate literally, but "like a sea-gull" or "of a sea-gull" comes close.
